I suppose it's better than what William Herschel, the discoverer of the
planet, wanted to call it -- he wanted to name it "Georgian Sidus" after
King George III. Still, I wonder why in the Roman mythos, Saturn/Kronus's
dad Ouranos was left out of the translation? Me, I'd have fired his agent.

These days, the US dollar is worth about $1.50 Canadian. Of course, rates
change daily, if not more often -- I've seen the exchange go from $1.46
to $1.50 in the space of a week... just before my one-week vacation trip
to the US last month (grumble, grumble).

Saturn and Jupiter were both names of gods who were worshiped in Italy
before the identification of Roman gods with their nearest Greek equivalents.
Ouranos in Greece was never actually worshipped in the religious system, he
existed in some stories and myths but wasn't considered "active". So there
was no compelling religious reason to find a Roman equivalent for Ouranos.
Ouranos was basically confined to Hesiod's early mythological account.
When Ovid produced his Roman version of the great Greek myths (which version
is the basis for most mythology texts of the middle ages and modern times) he
omitted the entire Ouranos story.

I'd learned, at my grandpappy's knee, that asterisk meant *bold*,
underline meant _underline_, slash meant /italic/; all generically
provide some form of emphasis to the words so marked.

And comfy shoes means Aslan pirates.

The Romans killed all those who opposed meetings? Lethal bureaucrat-mind...

ObTrav: The First Rule of any organization is Self-Perpetuation; the Second
Rule is Empire-Building. After 1,100 years of growth and competition, what
kind of Byzantine (and I use the word advisedly) bureaucratic organizations
and weird turf battles exist in your Traveller universe? Perhaps this is
why we never see a coherent picture of the Imperial Bureaucracy -- there
just isn't one.

Perhaps you are using an inappropriate historical model, I would suggest
that using the imperial Chinese bureaucracy/civil service as an archetype
might be more appropriate. It served for centuries through the rise and
fall of dynasties and even foreign invasion and conquest. Arguable it still
exists, albeit in a modified form, on both the mainland and Formosa.

Congratulations!

On Saturday I got to meet the baby of some old friends of mine. She was
really interesting (and cute, of course).

I've always wanted to play a character with green eyes and a fairly dark
(ie non-European) skin colouration, and was never sure quite how this
combination would work. But, my friends' baby looks like that! (Actually
her eyes are blue, and her hair is brownish.)

Basically, her father is anglo-Indian, giving her dark hair and skin, and
her mother is incredibly blond and blue-eyed. So you get this interesting
combination, that I'm more or less going to steal next time I roll up a
human PC.

Hmm, let's see - he's one of Ouzo's(*) old friends, is more or less a
merchant, or could be an ex-Scout. He'd be 30-something, and probably from
Regina. Now, what's his name? Scratches head....

Alan Bradley
alanb@elf.brisnet.org.au

(*) I'm doing a fair bit of solo stuff at the moment, because I'm not
currently living in "civilisation". Ouzo is one of my solo game
"alter-egos" and a recurring NPC in my face to face games, although his
name only dates from early this year.

It's clear Ewoks are amateurs!

Obviously all the professionals in the Star Wars universe have been
neglecting the study of tactics to an extreme degree....

Welcome back!

A lot of the people I worked with when I was in Port Moresby were former
employees of Bougainville Copper. Most of the "Bougainvillians" I knew
were actually from Buka. (Note to everyone else: Buka is a smaller island
just north of Bougainville.) I heard a lot about the place.

You should tell us a bit about it - how the society works, what the towns
and villages look like, and so on. It's definitely "not-Kansas", and thus
of interest. (Of course, I've never been to Kansas...)

I picked up "First In" and "Cats and Cows" on Saturday. I haven't really
looked at the Aslan section yet - I'm reading through the K'kree part in
detail. It's a bit different from the old CT Alien module. Most of it
kind of works, though. There's still the problem of them being too far
away from where my campaigns are usually set - it's hard to integrate them
into a game that uses Zhodani, Aslan and so on.

Was that the FASA Star Trek game?

FASA, of course, started as a Traveller licencee. The ST RPG was a
"cousin" of Traveller, with marked similarities.

So, it's only a mild heresy.

This should be an important feature. Remember, _The Traveller Book_
included and adventure ("Exit Visa") that was all about
Bureaucracies...

Then there was a similar White Dwarf scenario.
...interior, PC approaches permit desk with a simple request.

"OK."

"A what?"
"One of these."
"Wow, that's a pretty primitive writing tool, I've never seen one before.
Can I borrow one of yours to fill out these forms?"
...bureaucrat hands over a "Request to borrow writing implement form".
"Ummm, what do I use to fill *this* out?"
"Ball-point pen. All official forms must be filled out in ball-point pen."

I've always been fond of "GarryOwen", myself. OTOH, that may be a
result of having a Traveller character who, based on the T4 chargen
system, apparently spent most of his career in light armor (a.k.a.
"cavalry"). In fact, during his time as a major, he picked up
Equestrian skill. We ruled that he commanded his regiment's ceremonial
horse-mounted troop (his home regiment having traditions modeled after
late 19th century American cavalry, down to the Stetsons, yellow
kerchiefs, and boots and spurs)....
